川田画廊ではこのたび、画家 大沢昌助 の展覧会を開催いたします。
東京美術学校（現・東京芸術大学）西洋画科を首席で卒業。戦後、二科会再建時の創立会員として活躍しました。
サロンドメ、国際形象展、サンパウロビエナーレなど国際展にも数多く出品し、単純化された人物像を特徴とする初期作品から、80歳を過ぎて「ソフトライン」や「水平線シリーズ」など、簡潔でありながら色彩豊かな独自の抽象絵画を確立しました。
また、東京オリンピックのメイン会場である国立競技場や東京都新庁舎本会議場ロビーの壁画制作を手がけるなど、日本の公共空間にも多くの作品を残し、多くの美術館にもコレクションされています。
画面に配された形や線、抑制された色彩、そして余白。大沢の作品は多くを語らず、しかし強い緊張感と静かな存在感をたたえています。油彩、水彩、素描といった媒体を自在に行き来しながら、最小限の要素によって成立する画面には、日本的な感覚である「間」や「簡素」が深く息づいています。
本展では、油彩・水彩を中心に、大沢昌助の画業をあらためて見つめ直します。

Kawata Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the painter Shosuke Osawa.
Osawa graduated at the top of his class from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts). After World War II, he played a central role as a founding member in the reestablishment of the Nika Art Association.
He participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Salon de Mai, the International Figurative Exhibition, and the São Paulo Biennale. His artistic journey spans from early works characterized by simplified figurative forms to the establishment, after the age of eighty, of a distinctive abstract style seen in series such as Soft Line and Horizon, marked by concise forms and rich, vibrant color.
Osawa also left a significant legacy in Japan’s public spaces, producing large-scale murals for landmarks such as the National Stadium, the main venue of the Tokyo Olympics, and the lobby of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s main assembly hall. His works are held in the collections of many museums throughout Japan.
Composed of carefully placed forms and lines, restrained colors, and generous use of negative space, Osawa’s paintings speak quietly yet possess a strong sense of tension and presence. Moving freely between oil painting, watercolor, and drawing, his works achieve a powerful visual balance through minimal elements, deeply embodying the Japanese sensibilities of ma (interval) and simplicity.
This exhibition focuses on Osawa’s oil paintings and watercolors, offering an opportunity to reexamine his artistic legacy.
