川田画廊ではこのたび、韓国の画家 金明植（キム・ミョンシク）の個展を開催いたします。
金明植（キム・ミョンシク）は1949年、韓国・ソウル生まれ。中央大学校大学院修了後、約50年にわたり韓国、日本、アメリカ、中国、オーストラリアなど世界20都市以上で80回を超える個展を開催し、国際的に活躍を続ける韓国を代表する現代画家です。ロングアイランド大学、九州産業大学で客員教授を務め、現在は東亜大学校芸術大学美術学科名誉教授。作品はソウル市立美術館、釜山市立美術館をはじめ、多くの公共機関や企業コレクションに収蔵されています。
代表作「イーストサイド・ストーリー（East Side Story）」シリーズは、1999年にニューヨークを訪れたことを契機に誕生しました。ある日、アトリエへ向かう電車の車窓から見えた小さな家々が、まるでそこに暮らす人々の顔のように映ったと言います。その瞬間、彼はアトリエへ戻り、脳裏に浮かんだ人々の姿を夢中でキャンバスに描きました。こうして生まれたのが「イーストサイド・ストーリー」です。画面に描かれた家々は「人間」を、鮮やかな色彩はそこに生きる人々の多様性を象徴しています。
その原点には、都市開発によって失われた故郷・高徳里（コドクリ）の記憶があります。かつて故郷への郷愁を描き続けた経験を礎に生まれた「イーストサイド・ストーリー」は、多様な文化や価値観を認め合う「調和」と「平和」への願いを映し出す代表シリーズとして、20年以上にわたり描き継がれています。

Kawata Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Korean painter Kim Myung‑sik.
Kim Myung Sik was born in Seoul, Korea, in 1949. After completing his graduate studies at Chung-Ang University, he has pursued an active artistic career spanning nearly five decades, presenting more than 80 solo exhibitions in over 20 cities worldwide, including Seoul, Japan, the United States, China, and Australia. Recognized as one of Korea’s leading contemporary artists, he has also served as a visiting professor at Long Island University in New York and Kyushu Sangyo University in Fukuoka, Japan. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus of the Department of Fine Arts at the College of Arts, Dong-A University. His works are held in numerous public and corporate collections, including the Seoul Museum of Art and the Busan Museum of Art.
Kim Myung Sik’s renowned series East Side Story was born from his visit to New York in 1999. One day, while looking out the window of a train on his way to his studio, he saw small houses that appeared to him like the faces of the people who lived within them. Deeply inspired by this vision, he immediately returned to his studio and began painting the images of those people that had emerged in his mind. This moment marked the beginning of East Side Story. In these works, the houses represent “human beings,” while the vivid colors symbolize the diversity of the people who inhabit the world.
At the root of this series lies the memory of Goduk-ri, the artist’s hometown, which disappeared due to urban development. Having previously devoted himself to portraying the nostalgia and memories of his lost hometown, Kim transformed these experiences into East Side Story, a series that expresses his enduring belief in harmony and peace among people of different cultures and backgrounds. For more than two decades, he has continued to develop this body of work while exploring the universal themes of coexistence and connection.
This exhibition presents approximately 20 recent oil paintings. Through these works, visitors are invited to experience the world of Kim Myung Sik, an artist who has spent half a century exploring the profound relationship between “nature and humanity,” as well as the ideals of “harmony and peace.”
