Kawata Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition by sculptor Yu Kawahara.

Before creating my current series of sculptures,
my work—centered primarily on the materials themselves—was heavily influenced by the exhibition space.
I grappled with how to successfully stage an exhibition within a limited area.
This led me to consider a method of translating sculpture into a two-dimensional format.
I encased the carved wood within layers of resin, creating a smooth surface that effectively trapped the sculpture inside a flat plane.
This process evolved into the creative method I use today.

I aim to make the material itself the subject,
creating a sculpture that stands on its own—expanding the viewer’s perception in a painterly way—without relying solely on spatial context or physical mass.
