Kawata Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the painter **Shosuke Osawa**.

Shosuke Osawa (1903–1997) graduated at the top of his class from the Western Painting Department of Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts). After World War II, he played a central role in the reestablishment of the Nika Art Association as one of its founding members.

Osawa exhibited widely on the international stage, including the Salon de Mai, the International Figurative Art Exhibition, and the São Paulo Biennial. His artistic practice evolved from early works characterized by simplified figurative forms to a highly personal abstract language developed after the age of eighty, exemplified by his *Soft Line* and *Horizon* series—paintings that are restrained in form yet rich and vibrant in color.

In addition to his easel paintings, Osawa produced monumental mural works for public spaces, including the National Stadium built for the Tokyo Olympic Games and the lobby of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. His works are held in numerous museum collections throughout Japan.

The lightness, lyricism, and modern sensibility inherent in Osawa’s paintings continue to resonate strongly today and deserve renewed appreciation. This exhibition brings together a comprehensive selection from our collection, offering an overview of the artistic achievements of one of the leading figures in postwar Japanese painting.
