Kawata Gallery is honored to present a memorial exhibition in remembrance of the painter Mizu Tetsuo, who passed away last year.

Mizu Tetsuo was an artist who developed a singular abstract language by elevating International Maritime Signal Flags—a universal system of visual communication—into the realm of painting.
Clear geometric structures and restrained color palettes form the foundation of his work. Upon this structure, extraordinarily delicate lines are layered, creating compositions that are serene yet charged with quiet tension. While his paintings may initially appear intellectual and cool, prolonged contemplation reveals something more intimate: a subtle sense of human presence and poetic resonance. This quiet emergence is one of the most compelling qualities of Mizu Tetsuo’s work.

Based in Europe for many years, Miz Tetsuo produced numerous large-scale works for churches and public spaces, earning international recognition throughout his career. Yet despite this global acclaim, his paintings are never verbose. Instead, they are works that honor silence—paintings that invite the viewer to spend time, to pause, and to engage in a sustained, contemplative dialogue.

This exhibition focuses on works from the artist’s mature period.
Through recurring forms, carefully balanced compositions, and a level of quiet resolution achieved only through decades of reflection, these works embody the “universality” and “permanence” that Miz Tetsuo pursued throughout his life.

No new works will be created.
For this very reason, each painting presented here stands as an irreplaceable vessel of the artist’s thought and time. Bringing a refined tension and dignity to any space, these works continue to deepen in meaning and presence the longer they are lived with.
