Hide Kawanishi Exhibition

Kawata Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Kawanishi Hide (1894–1965), a master of sōsaku-hanga (creative woodblock printing).

Active from the Taishō through the Shōwa periods, Kawanishi Hide devoted his career to depicting the landscapes and everyday lives of the port city of Kobe, carving them into wood with a highly personal sensibility. Faithful to the principles of creative printmaking—drawing, carving, and printing by his own hand—he portrayed streets, harbors, hillsides, shops, and unremarkable moments of daily life with both strength and quiet warmth.

This exhibition centers on works from his celebrated series Kobe Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Kobe), alongside other prints that vividly convey the city’s seasons and the pulse of everyday living. Rather than focusing on tourist landmarks, Kawanishi turned his gaze toward Kobe as a lived environment. That perspective remains strikingly fresh today, offering insights that continue to resonate with contemporary viewers.

Bold compositions, luminous color, and rhythmical lines unique to woodblock printing characterize his work. Within these images coexist the vitality of a modern city in formation and a gentle awareness of landscapes destined to disappear. Kawanishi Hide’s prints are not only works of art, but also cultural records preserving the memory of a city.

Deeply rooted in Kobe, Kawanishi Hide stands as an artist inseparable from the spirit of the city. We hope this exhibition provides an opportunity to reexamine his work from a present-day perspective.

Biography of Hide Kawanishi

1894
Born on July 9 in present-day Higashide-cho, Hyogo Ward, Kobe. His real name was Hideo Kawanishi. He was raised as the third son of a wealthy merchant family that operated a shipping and grain wholesale business.

1915: Succeeding the Family Business and Becoming Postmaster
Graduated from Kobe Commercial School (currently Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Commercial High School). He took over the family business and later served as the postmaster of the Higashide Post Office (currently Kobe Higashide Post Office). While working, he pursued his passion for art through self-study.

1923: Encounter with Sosaku Hanga and First Acceptance
Deeply moved by an exhibition of Yumeji Takehisa and the prints of Kanae Yamamoto, he began creating woodblock prints. That same year, his work was accepted for the first time at the 5th Japan Creative Print Association (Nihon Sosaku Hanga Kyokai) Exhibition, marking the true beginning of his career as a printmaker.

1931: Founding the Japan Print Association
Participated as a founding member of the Japan Print Association (Nihon Hanga Kyokai). While deepening his interactions with renowned printmakers such as Un’ichi Hiratsuka and Shiko Munakata, he became a leading figure in the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement in the Kansai region.

1933–1936: Masterpiece “One Hundred Views of Kobe”
Produced his representative work, Kobe Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Kobe), featuring the vibrant pre-war landscapes and daily life of the city. He carved the exotic streets and harbor scenes using vivid colors and unique compositions.

1949: Hyogo Prefecture Cultural Award
Received the Hyogo Prefecture Cultural Award in recognition of his many years of contribution to printmaking art and his efforts in elevating regional culture.

1952–1953: “One Hundred New Views of Kobe”
Created Shin Kobe Hyakkei (One Hundred New Views of Kobe), depicting the new face of Kobe as it recovered and reconstructed after the war. While mourning the lost landscapes, he infused the prints with the vitality of a city moving toward the future.

1962: “One Hundred Views of Hyogo” and Kobe City Cultural Award
Started creating Hyogo Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Hyogo), which was serialized in the Kobe Shimbun newspaper (completed the following year). In the same year, he received the Kobe City Cultural Award, establishing an unshakable position in the local Kobe art scene.

1965: Passing and the Order of the Sacred Treasure
Passed away on February 20 at the age of 70. In recognition of his immense contributions to art and the city of Kobe, which he loved throughout his life, he was posthumously awarded the Fifth Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure.
